31 Days of Digital Mixtapes, Day Twenty-Two:
Essential Sounds of The Slackers
How could I be creating 31 mixtapes this month and not include one that is filled with songs from my favorite band? The answer is, “I couldn’t.” That mixtape is finally upon us. I’ve been listening to The Slackers for 15 years and they just keep getting better. My first experience with the band was at the 1998 Warped Tour and I’ve been hooked ever since. They play ska music the way it should be played, which is why it drives me crazy when they get lumped into the more ska-punk bands usually associated with Third Wave Ska.
The tricky thing with narrowing 15 years of fandom into a ten song mixtape is how you decide to approach it. First, I decided to incorporate my favorite songs. Makes sense right? It does, but it didn’t evoke the mood I was looking for. Instead, I went for songs that are representative of their work, as well as songs that jog my memory about how much fun I have when I see them live in Ann Arbor almost every year. There’s a song for this band that covers every single emotion I could have, and for that I thank them.
For the folks reading these mixtapes, I implore you: check out The Slackers. You won’t be disappointed.
