31 Days of Digital Mixtapes, Day Twenty-Eight:
My Introduction to Ska Music
My musical tastes have been through many incarnations – grunge, hard rock, heavy metal, punk, ska, reggae, hip hop, rap, gangster rap, g-funk – I think you get the point. The music I’ve loved the most in life is definitely ska music. I was a teenager during the third wave Orange County ska explosion, so while I knew of First Wave and 2-Tone bands, I stuck mostly with Third Wave. The picture at the bottom of this blog also does a pretty good job of showcasing how I dressed for the most part. I think my wife has successfully gotten me to donate all of my Hawaiian shirts though, Reel Big Fish be damned.
These days, while I still love lots of the ska punk I grew up with (and listen to the stapes regularly), I’m more likely to listen to bands like The Slackers, Hepcat, and the Green Room Rockers if given the choice. Call it a matured palate; call it being a snob; call it whatever you want to. I like what I like. Ska is my favorite genre, no matter what wave it comes from.
