Day Eighteen: Michael Jackson’s Thriller
This past weekend, my wife and I went with my brother-in-law and sister-in-law to see the Detroit stop for the latest Cirque Du Soleil traveling show – Michael Jackson’s Immortal tour. As an aside, in case you’re wondering about the show – overall it was really good. I had a few issues with it, but overall it was an amazing experience! Not only did that show remind me that I have far too little representation of Michael Jackson’s music in my collection, it also reminded me that I love listening to Thriller this time of year.
Back when Michael was in his prime, a new video used to be a major event. MTV did an amazing job hyping his videos and creating excitement. Let’s be honest, Michael’s videos were always amazing so that helped too, but I don’t think MTV will ever match the excitement and buzz around a Jackson video ever again. Hell, we’re lucky to see videos a few hours each day these days…but I digress.
One of my favorite Michael Jackson videos is Thriller. It’s absolutely perfect – a good storyline, great choreography, Vincent Price, and zombies! Plus, the song is great too. I remember when MTV would show the entire 14 minute film, plus the behind-the-scenes documentary. I’d watch them every single time they were on – even though I’ve seen them several times before. There’s just something about Michael Jackson’s Thriller that captures the magic and spirit of Halloween, so I try to watch the video at least one a year around this time. Thankfully, since MTV doesn’t seem to care about it any longer, I can find it on YouTube. Everything about this video is iconic (from that red leather jacket to Vincent Price’s laugh track at the end) and it needs to be treated as such.
What music do you listen to when you’re trying to get into the Halloween spirit?
